WHAT IF TAROT DID NOT NEED FALSE HISTORY TO BE MEANINGFUL?
Tarot is often surrounded by extraordinary claims: that it came from ancient Egypt, preserves a secret universal doctrine, predicts an unchangeable future, or gives certain answers to questions no one can truly verify. These stories may be compelling, but they can obscure the cards' documented history-and make responsible interpretation more difficult.
Tarot Without Myth offers another way.
Beginning with tarot's emergence as a Renaissance card game, Sophie Bergman follows its transformation across centuries of artistic, cultural, and occult development. She examines the earliest surviving cards, the Marseille tradition, Etteilla's influential system, the Golden Dawn, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the Thoth Tarot, and the modern assumptions readers have inherited from them.
This is not an argument against tarot. It is an invitation to understand it more clearly.
Alongside its historical exploration, the book provides a practical foundation for thoughtful reading. You will learn how images, traditional meanings, intuition, context, memory, and projection interact during interpretation. You will also discover why a card rarely has only one correct meaning-and how to distinguish a useful reading from a confident but unsupported claim.
Tarot Without Myth will help you:
- separate documented history from attractive legend
- recognize how tarot's familiar symbols developed
- ask clearer, more constructive questions
- choose spreads that suit the situation
- interpret cards without forcing certainty
- notice personal assumptions and emotional projection
- establish ethical boundaries when reading for yourself or others
- use tarot for reflection without encouraging fear or dependency
Accessible to complete beginners yet substantial enough for experienced readers, this book treats tarot as neither infallible prophecy nor meaningless superstition. Instead, it presents the deck as a rich symbolic system-one capable of supporting reflection, conversation, imagination, and careful judgment.
You do not have to choose between blind belief and automatic dismissal. There is a more honest path: one that respects evidence, acknowledges uncertainty, and still leaves room for wonder.
For readers who want history without sensationalism, practice without dogma, and mystery without misinformation.
