Typee is a novel written by Herman Melville that was first published in 1846. The book is a fictionalized account of Melville's own experiences living among the Typee people on the island of Nuku Hiva in the South Pacific. The protagonist, Tommo, is a sailor who jumps ship and finds himself stranded on the island. He is initially welcomed by the Typee people, who are known for their hospitality, but he soon realizes that he may never be able to leave. Tommo becomes fascinated by the Typee way of life and falls in love with a young woman named Fayaway. However, he also becomes increasingly aware of the darker aspects of their culture, including human sacrifice and cannibalism. As Tommo struggles to find a way to escape, he must confront his own prejudices and assumptions about the Typee people. The novel is notable for its vivid descriptions of life in the South Pacific and its exploration of themes such as colonialism, cultural difference, and the nature of civilization.Sailors are the only class of men who now-a-days see anything like stirring adventure; and many things which to fire-side people appear strange and romantic, to them seem as commonplace as a jacket out at elbows. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
