This delicate set of variations opens with a pointillistic texture, rather than a clear thematic idea. It poetically evokes the ethereal sounds and textures of the quiet stillness of twilight by painting a picture of the brightness of the sun emerging to fill a sky once speckled with fragmented points of light. The variations are grouped first by pointillistic textures, then lyrical melodies in which the theme is heard for the first time, followed by a climactic section, and finally a combination of pointillistic and lyrical material.
