Before many television sitcoms reach our screens production companies and broadcasters make Pilot episodes. These pilots are used to test factors like the overall premise, plot lines, characters, etc. They will be seen by tv executives and even viewing panels to gauge reactions, which in turn could lead to a series being commissioned, changes being suggested for a re-write, or the entire project could get scrapped. The TV Pilot Graveyard documents fifty-five of these sitcom pilots that we never got to see, some were just not good enough to be broadcast or made into a series. Others were due to become a series, but were cancelled due to other factors, including in some cases the death of the creative talent involved. Had one of the failed pilots been successful it might have meant that Only Fools and Horses would not have been made!
