Turf Characters, by Martingale (James White), offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of horse racing and its associated social strata in 19th-century Britain. The book provides vivid sketches of the officials, jockeys, and various subalterns who populated the racing scene. Through detailed descriptions and anecdotal observations, White captures the essence of this vibrant subculture, shedding light on the characters and customs that defined it.
More than just a sporting narrative, Turf Characters serves as a valuable social document, reflecting the broader social dynamics and class distinctions of the time. White's work is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of horse racing, British social history, or the colorful characters who shaped the sporting world.
