Henry Tudor was born into a minor branch of the English royal family and his already widowed mother would not have believed she had given birth to a future King of England . His father, Edmund Tudor had been the son of Owen Tudor and Queen Katherine, the widow of Henry V. It was the illness of Henry VI, which would lead to a series of battles dubbed the War of the Roses and eventually give Henry Tudor the chance to grab the throne by winning a battle at Bosworth Field in August 1485. Yet victory at Bosworth was only the beginning of the process to gain and then retain the throne.
