The True Tragedy of Rienzi: Tribune of Rome is a historical play written by John Todhunter and first published in 1881. The play is set in 14th century Rome and follows the story of Cola di Rienzi, a commoner who rises to power as the Tribune of Rome. Rienzi is portrayed as a charismatic leader who seeks to restore the glory of Rome and establish a republic. However, his idealistic vision clashes with the corrupt aristocracy and the papacy, leading to his downfall and eventual death. The play is a tragic portrayal of the conflict between individual ambition and the forces of political power. Todhunter's work is considered a significant contribution to the genre of historical drama, and the play has been adapted for stage and screen numerous times over the years. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
