Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde is a medieval poem that tells the story of the tragic love affair between Troilus, a Trojan prince, and Criseyde, a widowed noblewoman. Set against the backdrop of the Trojan War, the poem explores the themes of love, betrayal, and the fickleness of fate. The story begins with Troilus falling deeply in love with Criseyde, who has been brought to Troy as part of a prisoner exchange. Despite her initial resistance, Criseyde eventually falls in love with Troilus as well, and the two begin a secret affair. However, their happiness is short-lived, as Criseyde is eventually forced to return to her father in Greece. As Troilus mourns the loss of his love, he is comforted by his friend Pandarus, who had helped to facilitate the affair. However, Pandarus is also secretly working with Criseyde's uncle, who is plotting to have her marry a Greek warrior. In the end, Criseyde succumbs to societal pressure and abandons Troilus, leaving him heartbroken and alone.Written in Middle English, Troilus and Criseyde is considered one of Chaucer's greatest works and a masterpiece of medieval literature. It is renowned for its vivid characters, intricate plot, and beautiful language, and has influenced countless writers and poets in the centuries since its publication. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
