In The Trick Was the Foundation, forensic reconstructionist Corey Delithius Thompson follows the chain that turned living peoples into administrative categories. Census math, legal statutes, land deeds, church records, school exclusions, and wounded archives do not tell separate stories-they tell the same operation from different angles.
A descriptor became a container. A container became inheritable status. Status became the condition for losing land, testimony, kinship, and origin itself. The people did not disappear. The record was trained to call their continuity something else.
