Since the first edition of this work appeared, events have made rapid and startling progress; the short interval of two years has been signalized by a development of the signs of the times which has struck the minds of all--even of those who are the least inclined to recognize in it the fulfilment of prophecy. A brief review of the main points will be interesting--and will serve to throw light both upon the events which have come to pass in the interval, and upon their bearing on the future. On the 15th of September 1864, an occurrence took place which attracted but little public attention at the time, but which was noted by students of prophecy as tending, in a most remarkable and even startling degree, to bring about a consummation which had all along been looked for--and which seems at the present time, just two years later, to be on the very point of accomplishment. This occurrence was the Convention entered into by the French Emperor with the King of Italy to withdraw from Eome the French garrison which has upheld the Pope's September 27, 1866. dominion there for the last eighteen years. This convention was framed in September, and ratified in the December following: and by it the French Emperor pledged himself to evacuate Eome within two years from that time--that is, before the end of the year 1866. The consummation which this event was considered, by students of prophecy, likely to bring about, is the termination of the temporal power of the Pope.
