This is the founding scripture of the Order of Élus Coëns and the doctrinal wellspring of the entire Martinist tradition. Composed by Martinès de Pasqually - the enigmatic theurgist who initiated Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin and whose Order shaped the course of French esoteric Freemasonry - the Reintegration was written for his highest initiates alone. Begun at Bordeaux around 1770 and left unfinished at his death in 1774, the manuscript remained known only to a small circle of adepts until its first, incomplete printing in 1899, nearly 130 years after it was written. Descended through the papers of the theosopher of Amboise to the historian Jacques Matter's family, the present translation is drawn from that same manuscript tradition.
The treatise sets out Pasqually's account of the first spiritual and divine properties, virtues, and powers of created beings: the emanation of spiritual beings from the bosom of the Divinity, the prevarication and fall of the first spirits, the creation of the material universe as their place of chastisement, the glory and fall of Adam as the Man-God, and the long labor of reintegration by which fallen spirit is restored to its divine origin. Written in Pasqually's own difficult and highly idiosyncratic French, dense with a private vocabulary of types, reconciliation, and the quadruple divine essence, it is less a systematic treatise than the record of a theurgist instructing his initiates directly - as demanding, and as rewarding, in translation as in the original.
Sâr Phosphoros, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Christian Knights of Saint-Martin, provides a translator's introduction addressing Pasqually's singular vocabulary and prose, together with a historical notice on Martinèsism and Martinism tracing the Order's afterlife through Saint-Martin, Rodolphe de Salzmann, and the Rectified Rite. Readers wanting a fuller guide to the doctrine it contains are directed to René Le Forestier's companion study, Occultist Freemasonry in the 18th Century and the Order of Élus Coëns. This edition offers Martinist and Coën initiates, and scholars of French esotericism, direct access to the primary text at the root of their tradition.
