A Traveller From Altruria is a novel written by William Dean Howells, first published in 1894. The book tells the story of a visitor from the fictional utopian society of Altruria, who comes to America to observe and learn about its culture and society. The protagonist, Mr. Homos, is initially fascinated by the wealth and prosperity of America, but as he delves deeper into its society, he becomes increasingly disillusioned by its greed, inequality, and corruption. Through his encounters with various characters, including a wealthy businessman, a labor activist, and a religious leader, Homos offers a critique of American society and proposes alternative solutions based on the principles of Altrurianism. The book is considered a classic of utopian literature and a commentary on the social and political issues of its time.I confess that with all my curiosity to meet an Altrurian, I was in no hospitable mood towards the traveller when he finally presented himself, pursuant to the letter of advice sent me by the friend who introduced him. It would be easy enough to take care of him in the hotel; I had merely to engage a room for him, and have the clerk tell him his money was not good if he tried to pay for anything. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
