Pereira and dictated by the wise, compassionate spirit Dr. Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes, The Tragedy of Santa Maria is a masterpiece of Spiritist literature that unveils the perfect workings of divine justice, reincarnation, and the healing power of forgiveness across critical historical eras.
The epic narrative begins in Rio de Janeiro during the late nineteenth century at the magnificent Santa Maria estate. Esmeralda de Barbedo, the beautiful daughter of Dr. Antonio de Barbedo, a proud Portuguese slaveholder, returns from her studies in Portugal. Raised with noble principles, Esmeralda possesses a compassionate heart, immediately improving the lives of her father's enslaved workers and granting several of them their freedom. Her path is linked with that of Dr. Bento Jose de Souza Goncalves (Bentinho), a brilliant young lawyer and dedicated abolitionist who has freed his own slaves at great personal financial sacrifice. The two share an ancient, powerful spiritual affinity and marry in a splendid ceremony, looking forward to a radiant future together.
However, their happiness is fiercely opposed by Severina Soares, Barbedo's former housekeeper and second wife, and her daughter Ana Maria. Driven by unbridled ambition, jealousy, and spite after Bentinho politely rejects Ana Maria's romantic advances, the two women orchestrate a ruthless slander campaign. Aided by an unscrupulous ally, they send anonymous letters defaming Esmeralda's honor. This sparks intense tension between Barbedo and his son-in-law. When Severina realizes their plot is on the verge of being exposed, she and Ana Maria sneak into Esmeralda's bedroom through a hidden revolving door and brutally strangle the young pregnant woman, framing Bentinho for the crime. Unhinged by grief, Barbedo demands vengeance, leading to Bentinho's unjust imprisonment, severe physical torture, and tragic death in a public jail.
The second part of the novel moves forward in time, showing that the designs of the Creator are perfect and that no soul is abandoned to eternal damnation. Through the loving intervention of the spirit of Dr. Bezerra de Menezes and the mediumistic faculties of Frederico Junior, the grieving Barbedo discovers the reality of the spirit world, embraces Spiritism, and dedicates his remaining years to free medical charity. Years later, a dramatic deathbed confession reveals the absolute innocence of Bentinho and the guilt of Severina, leading to the legal and social rehabilitation of the victims. Spanning deep karmic debts originating from a tragic crime committed during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, the narrative reaches its beautiful conclusion in the twentieth century. Reborn in Switzerland as the young agronomist Max Niemeyer and the wealthy heiress Pamela, the bound spirits of Bentinho and Esmeralda reunite through their shared study of Esperanto. Guided by the laws of reincarnation, they marry and begin their new life of redemption, illustrating that true love and divine mercy always triumph over earthly tragedies.
