Discovery of the body of a neighborhood recluse at the birthplace of President Theodore Roosevelt in the comfortable Gramercy Park section of Manhattan sets off an investigation by federal and New York City police. A politically connected power broker with ties to City Hall, his attractive mistress, whose background leaves much to be desired, a Rhode Island businessman, whose activities are questioned even by members of his own family, and an anonymous woman, whose letters attempt to steer police off course, figure prominently in the investigation.
