Drawing on anthropology, feminist theory, trauma research, and a decade of close observation, Elana Sztokman identifies seventy-nine distinct patterns of abusive communication and sorts them into seven families - from lying and bullying to crazy-making, silencing, dehumanization, and misogyny. Each tactic is named, illustrated with examples from public life and everyday interaction, and connected to what abuse experts already understand about how these moves work on the people they target.
The premise is simple: naming a tactic takes away some of its power. Once you can see a move as a move, you are no longer swept along in it. You are breaking it.
This is not a book about winning arguments. It is a book about clarity. It is about taking back our language, our attention, our sanity, and our civil discourse.
