For more than a century the sinking of the Titanic has been explained as a tragic collision with an iceberg on a calm April night in 1912.

According to the switch theory, the ship that sank was not Titanic at all, but her damaged sister ship Olympic, secretly exchanged in an elaborate insurance fraud. It is a theory that sounds improbable - and yet it continues to attract attention more than a hundred years later.
This book examines that claim carefully, following the evidence through shipyard records, engineering testimony, and the official inquiries that attempted to explain the disaster.
The switch theory may not survive close examination. But the questions it raises about the ship, the inquiry, and the way disasters become stories are harder to dismiss.
