The Time of Indifference is a groundbreaking work of psychological realism and a seminal debut that explores the spiritual and moral paralysis of a middle-class Italian family. Set in Rome during the late 1920s, the narrative centers on the Ardengo family, who find themselves trapped in a cycle of emotional stagnation and social pretense. As the manipulative Leo Merumeci schemes to seize the family's remaining assets while maintaining an affair with the matriarch, Maria Grazia, her children, Carla and Michele, struggle with a profound sense of indifference-a crippling inability to truly care or take decisive action against their own degradation.
Often cited as one of the earliest existentialist novels, Alberto Moravia's work provides a stark portrait of characters who are acutely aware of their own hypocrisy yet remain powerless to change their circumstances. Through sharp dialogue and keen social observation, The Time of Indifference captures a world where genuine passion has been replaced by habit and morality by a desperate need for status. This landmark of 20th-century literature remains a powerful study of the human condition and the suffocating weight of societal expectations.
