This work examines how white farmers responded as economic and political events undermined farming as the nexus of upcountry life and how relationships between them changed as they adapted to a world where industry trumped land ownership and the personal nature of southern agriculture was replaced by the impersonal drive for profit. White farmers in the upcountry continually sought to remain united even as farming no longer proved a sufficient means for ensuring not only their livelihood, but also their ideal of liberty. Their search for common ground led white farmers to form a strong racial bond that would come to define values long past the nineteenth century or even World War I.
