Shim's poems are free from the sentimentality and self-pity often found in many Korean poets' works. They are also far from the solemnity that tends to make people tense up when they think of poetry. Her metaphors and expressions are sharp and light, and the language she employs is never lofty or obscure. As a result, her poems are easy and enjoyable to read-but that doesn't make them ordinary or generic.
Shim possesses an eye that sees what others overlook and a touch that senses what others cannot feel. Within landscapes or objects people tend to pass by without a second glance, she draws out and reveals what only she can see and touch-allowing the reader to see and feel it too.
