The story revolves around the life of a young woman named Margaret, who is forced to leave her idyllic country life and move to London after her father's death. Margaret is left to fend for herself in a world that is vastly different from what she is used to. As she tries to adjust to her new life, Margaret meets and falls in love with a young artist named Adrian. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Adrian is already engaged to another woman. Margaret also has to deal with the advances of a wealthy and powerful man who is determined to make her his mistress. The novel explores themes of love, betrayal, and the struggle for independence in a society that is dominated by men. It also highlights the challenges faced by women in the late 19th century, particularly those who dared to defy societal norms and pursue their own dreams and desires.
