The Thorn Throne Book: Ravings of the Mad Crow King is the final, darkly luminous volume in K.G. Walton's Animal Sense septenary: a series of animal-minded observations that travels from the dog's loyalty, through the cat's self-possession, the owl's vigilance, the raccoon's resourcefulness, the fox's cunning, and the spider's patient patterning, before arriving at the crow's terrible gift for omen, judgment, memory, and defiance. The Mad Crow King does not arrive as a simple character. He decrees as though all the forms of attention that preceded him have gathered into one black head and learned to speak.
