There is a Native American proverb, A nation is not conquered until the hearts of its women are on the ground. In North America the trend of taking children from mothers and thus, imprisoning a mother's heart, has run rampant for many years. This Is Now That Was Then metaphorically describes scavenging-for-sustenance children and their right to be with their mother-no matter how imprisoned-by-life-events she may be in her quest to survive.
