Inspired by his granddaughters, Emily and Julia, Rod Martin created Things I Don't Know About Animals as a heartfelt tribute to the joy they've brought into his life. Though they're no longer little, this book is a way for them to share their Bapa's creativity with friends while celebrating his love and encouragement of their many talents.
Rod's fascination with animals-mixed with a healthy respect for the ones that bite, sting, or chase-shines through these playful, rhyming poems. From chance encounters with sharks in Pacific waters, to escaping bulls on a hike, to the sting of a centipede, his stories reflect both humor and humility. He admits he's no expert, but his curiosity and delight in the natural world make every page inviting.
Paired with the lively illustrations of Nadine Yokotake, this collection is both fun and thoughtful, offering children and families a lighthearted look at the mysteries of the animal kingdom.
For readers who enjoy Martin's whimsical style, he also recommends exploring his other works for the young and young at heart, including The Tale of Natalie Nightingale, Excuses, Excuses, Baby's Day, Rhyme Time, Painting Poetry for All Earth's Children, Check This Out, and The Vorpal Snit. Poetry lovers can also dive into his collections Faith, Love and Hope, Rod Martin's Poetic Madness, and Poetic Reflections.
With warmth, humor, and lots of aloha, Rod Martin invites you to enjoy the poetry, the pictures, and the wonder of animals-known and unknown.
