Don't rush me. Mike took the hairspray can. If I don't come back, promise to show the baby my picture.
Every day, I said, solemnly.
And Apollo.
He's a dog.
I know. But he'll get jealous. I don't want him to feel left out.
I sighed. As much as I loved Mike, he was never going to budge from the hallway. You know what, I'll go. I'm sure it'll be fine. He's probably long gone by now.
Step back, woman. There's no need to get pushy. I'm going. Brandishing the hairspray can like a club, Mike crept into the apartment. I followed a few steps behind him.
Slowly, we tiptoed through the rooms. Mike with his deadly can of hairspray. Me, at his back, checking for hidden burglars...
Living room... Empty.
Closet... Empty.
Bathroom... Empty.
As we were about to go into the kitchen, there was a loud noise from our bedroom, followed by a staccato spray of sound.
Bedroom, Mike mouthed.
No kidding, I whispered.
There was another burst of noise, followed by a choking sound.
That doesn't sound good. Do you think he's okay? Mike asked.
You're seriously worried about our burglar?!
What if he's dying?
Then we have one less problem. Why do you care?
The cops will never believe us if we tell them we found a burglar in our house and he just happened to be dead.
There was another gasping, choking noise.
Mike tightened his grip on the hairspray can. He sounds like he needs CPR.
He burgled us. If he's choking, I think we're allowed to let him die.
That's not very nice. What if he has a family? Maybe we should call an ambulance?
You are unbelievable. The man's a criminal, not a potential play date.
Mike shot me a look.
Fine. I'll try calling 911 again. Maybe they can send an ambulance along with the squad car.
