As a middle-aged spinster, most women would be anxious to marry. But Theresa, as an almost-forty black woman in Colorado in 1896, and a suffragette to boot, has a tough row to hoe. Freed as a young woman by the War Between the States when she was a child, her memories of living in bondage are as vivid as if they'd happened yesterday.
