The Theory and History of Poetry is a comprehensive guide to understanding the art of poetry written by Charles Mills Gayley. The book is divided into two parts, with the first part focusing on the theory and principles of poetry, and the second part delving into the history and development of poetry throughout different eras and cultures. In the first part, Gayley provides an in-depth analysis of the essential elements of poetry, such as meter, rhyme, imagery, and figurative language. He also explores the different forms of poetry, including sonnets, ballads, and epic poems, and discusses the importance of sound and rhythm in creating effective poetry. The second part of the book takes a historical approach to poetry, tracing its evolution from ancient times to the modern era. Gayley examines the works of famous poets from different cultures and time periods, including Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and Whitman, and analyzes their contributions to the development of poetry.Throughout the book, Gayley provides numerous examples of poetry and analyzes them in detail, helping readers to better understand the concepts and theories he presents.
