The book Theories Of Figures Of Celestial Bodies by Wenceslas S. Jardetzky is a comprehensive study of the mathematical theories and models used to describe the shapes and motions of celestial bodies such as planets, stars, and galaxies. The author, who was a renowned mathematician and physicist, explores the historical development of these theories and their applications in modern astronomy. The book begins with an overview of the basic principles of celestial mechanics, including the laws of motion and gravity, and the ways in which these principles are applied to the study of celestial bodies. The author then delves into the mathematical models used to describe the shapes and sizes of these bodies, including the oblateness of planets and the distortions caused by their rotation.Throughout the book, Jardetzky explores various theories and models proposed by scientists over the centuries, including those of Newton, Laplace, and Poincar. He also discusses more recent developments in the field, such as the use of computer simulations to model the motions of galaxies and the search for dark matter.Overall, Theories Of Figures Of Celestial Bodies is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the mathematical principles and models used in the study of astronomy and celestial mechanics. It provides a thorough overview of the subject, from its historical roots to its modern applications, and is written in a clear and accessible style that will appeal to both students and professionals in the field. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
