The First Philosopher: Thales introduces young readers to the fascinating life and ideas of Thales of Miletus, the thinker widely regarded as the first philosopher in Western history. Through the adventures of curious thirteen-year-old İrem and her family, readers embark on an engaging journey into the origins of philosophy, science, mathematics, and critical thinking.
When İrem overhears her older brothers discussing Thales, she becomes determined to learn more about the mysterious figure who was both a philosopher and a mathematician. Her research reveals a remarkable individual who sought natural explanations for the world around him instead of accepting myths and legends. As she shares her discoveries, readers learn how Thales explored questions about nature, knowledge, existence, and the universe-questions that continue to inspire people today.
The story introduces young readers to Thales' many achievements. They discover how he used observation and reasoning to explain natural events, predicted a solar eclipse, studied astronomy, developed important geometric principles, measured the height of the Egyptian pyramids, advised kings, improved navigation for sailors, and became known as one of history's earliest engineers. Through these examples, the book demonstrates how curiosity and careful observation can lead to extraordinary discoveries.
At the heart of the book lies an exploration of philosophy itself. What is knowledge? How do we understand the world? Why do people ask questions about existence, nature, and meaning? Through lively family conversations, debates, and humorous exchanges, readers are encouraged to think critically, question assumptions, and appreciate the value of evidence and logical reasoning. The book shows how Thales helped transform humanity's understanding of the world by seeking explanations based on observation rather than superstition.
Written in an accessible and entertaining style, The First Philosopher: Thales makes complex philosophical and scientific ideas understandable for young readers. It demonstrates that philosophy is not merely a subject from the past but a way of thinking that encourages curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.
Perfect for readers aged 10-14, this inspiring book combines history, philosophy, science, and storytelling to introduce one of humanity's greatest thinkers. By following İrem's journey of discovery, young readers learn that every important idea begins with a simple question-and that asking questions is often the first step toward changing the world.
