Thaddeus of Warsaw is a historical novel written by Jane Porter. The story is set in the late 18th century in Poland, during a time of political turmoil and war with Russia. The protagonist, Thaddeus Sobieski, is a young Polish nobleman who is forced to flee his homeland after his family is killed and his estate is seized by the Russians.Thaddeus travels to England, where he meets and falls in love with Miss Emily Plater, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. However, their happiness is short-lived as Thaddeus is called back to Poland to fight for his country's independence. Emily follows him to Poland and together they face the dangers and challenges of war.The novel is a tale of love, sacrifice, and patriotism, as Thaddeus and Emily struggle to survive in a world torn apart by political conflict. It is also a vivid depiction of Polish history and culture, with detailed descriptions of the country's landscape, customs, and traditions.Thaddeus of Warsaw was first published in 1803 and became a bestseller in its time. It remains a classic of historical fiction and an important work in the canon of Polish literature. When I recovered, I found myself at the foot of that statue beneath which my unfortunate destiny had been fixed. My husband was leaning over me. He raised me with tenderness from the ground, and conjured me, in the mildest accents, to be comforted; to pardon the severity of those words, which had arisen from a fear that, by an imprudent avowal on my part, I should risk both his happiness and my own. He informed me that he was heir to one of the first families in England; and before he set out for the continent, he had pledged his honor to his father never to enter into any matrimonial engagement without first acquainting him with the particulars of the lady and her family. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
