Gordon Grant (1875-1962) was renowned for his maritime drawings and paintings. Collected in this book, originally published circa 1919 by McLoughlin Brothers of New York, the reader will find 42 wonderful color and black-and-white illustrations by Grant, depicting not only the history of the sailing vessel, but also other facts of nautical life. From an Egyptian sailing ship circa 1600 B.C. to World War I-era Destroyers and a submarine, The Story of The Ship gives a fascinating pictorial view, complemented by informative text, of the ship's evolution. Included are such famous vessels as the Santa Maria, the Monitor, and the U.S.S. Constitution. (Thousands of prints of a later 1926 color painting of the U.S.S. Constitution by Grant were sold to raise money for the preservation of the historic ship; the original painting even spent some time hanging in the Oval Office.)
