Tannh�����user is an opera in three acts by Richard Wagner, first performed in Dresden in 1845. The story is based on the medieval German legend of Tannh�����user, a knight and minstrel who is torn between the pleasures of the flesh and the spiritual life. In the opera, Tannh�����user falls in love with the goddess Venus and lives with her in her underground realm. However, he eventually becomes disillusioned with this life and returns to the world above, seeking redemption for his sins.
