Tales of the Turf: And Rank Outsiders is a book written by Richard L. Cary Jr. and was first published in 1891. The book is a collection of short stories about horse racing and the people involved in it. The stories are set in the late 19th century and are based on real events and characters. The book is divided into two parts: Tales of the Turf and Rank Outsiders. The first part, Tales of the Turf, is a collection of stories about horse racing and the people who participate in it. The stories are told from the perspective of jockeys, trainers, owners, and spectators. They cover a range of topics, including the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and the politics of the sport. The second part, Rank Outsiders, is a collection of stories about people who are not directly involved in horse racing but are affected by it. These stories are about gamblers, con artists, and other shady characters who try to profit from the sport. The stories are often humorous and satirical, but they also reveal the darker side of horse racing.Overall, Tales of the Turf: And Rank Outsiders is an entertaining and informative book that provides a unique glimpse into the world of horse racing in the late 19th century. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the sport or in the social and cultural context in which it developed. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
