The story follows Hiroshi Nishimura, a boy whose childhood was defined by his best friend, Takeshi Minamoto. When they were children, Takeshi was Hiroshi's protector -- braver, louder, and always there to hold his hand. However, their childhood ended abruptly one rainy afternoon when an eight-year-old Hiroshi stepped into the path of an oncoming car. In that terrifying moment, time suddenly froze, and Takeshi whispered a desperate prayer to let Hiroshi live, regardless of the cost to himself.
When time resumed, Hiroshi was safe, but Takeshi was gone. Not just missing, but erased. His apartment was empty, his school records vanished, and he was even gone from the photographs they had taken together. Hiroshi became the only person in the world who remembered Takeshi existed, leading others to believe he was merely an imaginary friend.
Nine years later, a seventeen-year-old Hiroshi is a loner at Sakura High School, having built emotional walls to protect himself from further loss. His world is upended when a transfer student joins his class: a seventeen-year-old Takeshi Minamoto. While the rest of the world sees a stranger, Hiroshi recognizes his childhood friend.
Takeshi reveals the truth: he has the magical ability to stop time, but using it comes with a cost -- his own existence. By saving Hiroshi as a child, he broke the rules of reality and was erased into a gray space between moments, where he watched Hiroshi grow up from a distance. He has returned on borrowed time to see Hiroshi again, knowing he will eventually fade away permanently.
As they rekindle their bond, the erasure begins anew. People around them start forgetting Takeshi again; teachers skip his name in attendance, and he becomes invisible to their classmates. Hiroshi desperately documents their days in a journal and tries to capture Takeshi on camera, but Takeshi appears only as a faint, ghostly shimmer that eventually fades entirely.
The climax occurs at a high-altitude observation deck in Tokyo. When a reinforced glass window shatters, Hiroshi nearly falls to his death. Takeshi stops time to save him once more, but the massive effort accelerates his fading. He tells Hiroshi that the best way to honor his sacrifice is not through suffering or isolation, but by living. Takeshi finally disappears completely during a summer fireworks festival, after confessing his love for Hiroshi.
In the aftermath, Hiroshi struggles with a new kind of erasure: his own memories are beginning to fail. He meets Kai, a patient and kind classmate who falls for him. Hiroshi eventually realizes that holding onto the grief of a boy he can no longer even visualize is preventing him from having the life Takeshi died to give him.
Ten years later, Hiroshi is twenty-eight, living a full life as a book editor in Tokyo. He is happily engaged to Kai. Though he can no longer remember Takeshi's face or voice, he understands that Takeshi is the foundation of his happiness. He concludes that we honor those we've lost not by staying stuck in the past, but by becoming someone worthy of their sacrifice. The story ends with the affirmation that while Takeshi is gone, the love and life he made possible remain
