Four footprints. Sixty-six and a half million years old. The first known trackway of a full-grown T. rex ever found.
In the summer of 2025, a Colorado teacher volunteering on a fossil dig in North Dakota looked down at the ground - and saw something sticking up out of the rock that had been waiting 66.5 million years to be noticed.
It was a trackway: four enormous three-toed footprints, each about three feet long, marching in a straight line across 23 feet of ancient mud turned to stone. Two left feet. Two right feet. A 13-foot stride. Scientists say they were likely made by an adult Tyrannosaurus rex out for a walk at about 3.5 to 4.5 miles per hour - half a million years before the asteroid hit.
T. Rex Trackway for Kids is the 100% true story of that discovery, written for curious kids ages 8-12. Follow the footprints from the badlands to the laboratory as researchers 3D-scan every toe, wrap the giant stone prints in plaster and burlap, and plan a helicopter flight to carry them to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Plus the bonus story of three boys who found a teenage T. rex on a family hike - and did exactly the right thing.
Inside you'll find:
- The true story of the first known adult T. rex trackway, announced September 2026
- 15 original black-and-white illustrations, from the fossil skull to the helicopter rescue
- A kid quiz, By the Numbers stats, a glossary, and a full sources section
- Real paleontology: how scientists read speed, size, and behavior from footprints in stone
Part of the Nuggets series by Jon Weeks - short, thrilling, 100% true science stories for kids who love dinosaurs, fossils, and real discoveries.
