A classic among war books.
Don't shoot. Don't waste your bullets. I am immortal were the words inscribed on Paul Marchand's car in Sarajevo, while the city was under siege. Other sources claim that Paul actually wrote: Morituri te salutant - those who are about to die salute you.
Sympathy for the Devil, which crackles like gunfire in the night, explores how an international correspondent can go beyond his role, fall in love and save lives in spite of himself, in a Sarajevo steeped in snow and blood, tears and hope. No one returns undamaged from a journey like this, and the bullet fired through Paul's hand also tears through his mind.
The book was brought to the big screen by Guillaume de Fontenay (winning a total of 8 prizes at various festivals) with Niels Schneider in the leading role (Winner of the Best Actor Award at Saint-Jean-de-Luz Festival).
Born in 1961, Paul Marchand took his own life on 20th June 2009. He was awarded the Bayeux-Calvados Prize for War Correspondents and is the author of Sympathie pour le Diable, Ceux qui vont mourir (2001), J'abandonne aux chiens l'exploit de nous juger (2003) and Le Paradis d'en face (2007).
