Mit seinem Werk 'Karl der Gro e' hat der Stricker im frühen 13. Jh. eine Überarbeitung und Aktualisierung des älteren 'Rolandslieds' des Pfaffen Konrad erstellt. Dabei hat er nicht nur die Geschichte von Karls Spanienzug in die Form des hochhöfischen Epos überführt und ein stilistisch ausgereifteres Werk vorgelegt, sondern er verschob auch den Aspekt der Erzählung und richtete den Blick verstärkt auf den heiligmä igen Kaiser. Ein deutlicher Hinweis, wie populär sein Werk war, ist die reiche Überlieferung mit 24 Handschriften und 21 Fragmenten. Innerhalb dieser Überlieferung sind verschiedene Fassungen zu unterscheiden, die nicht auf textkritischem Wege voneinander abgeleitet werden können.
Gegenüber bisherigen Veröffentlichungen des Texts wird nun erstmals eine Edition vorgelegt, die den Text einer Fassung (*CDE) herstellt, den Bezug zur Vorlage nachweist und umfangreiche Verständnishilfen bietet. Die Arbeitsweise des Strickers wird dadurch nachvollziehbar. Ergänzt wird die Edition durch einen ausführlichen Stellenkommentar, ein Namenverzeichnis und ein ausführliches Glossar, das den Wortschatz des Strickers erschlie t.
