The tremendous advances in design and development of Steel Pan instruments have not been
accompanied by a matching development in capability to address the music documenting and
sharing challenges faced by Steel Pan musicians who are unfamiliar with standard notation. Steel Pan Tablature (PAN TAB) is a music notation system that is intuitive, and very easy for Steel

Pan musicians to understand and apply. It is based on a combination of Note Names with which
Pannist are familiar, together with a Music Staff that is derived from the design characteristics of
the instruments in the steel pan family. PAN TAB provides a number of tools for writing down steel pan music and supplementing
learning by rote. It also provides a sound foundation for learning and eventually mastering Standard Notation. PAN TAB is compatible with but does not require previous knowledge of standard notation. The
addition of PAN TAB to standard notation scores will open new vistas to the steel pan community,
make original Steel Pan music more available to other musicians, and further the integration of
Steel Pan instruments into conventional ensembles and orchestras. This book, written by Teddy Charles, a Steel Pan music enthusiast, offers a simple music notation
system that does for Steel Pan musicians what GUITAR TAB does for Guitarists.
