In the heart of Ulaanbaatar, where the ancient winds of the steppes collide with the cold edges of urban life, State of Dogs unfolds a story unlike any other-a tale of a
stray dog named Sharik who rejects the fate of reincarnation as a human. As he roams the streets and open plains of Mongolia, his memories intertwine with the country's
rich spiritual heritage, offering a profound meditation on life, freedom, and the human condition.
Blending magical realism with sharp social insight, State of Dogs captures the tension between Mongolia's deep-rooted traditions and its modern struggles. Through Sharik's
eyes, we witness not just the world of stray dogs but the complexities of human nature -its betrayals, kindness, and longing for something beyond itself. A story of loyalty,
identity, and the soul's journey, State of Dogs is a timeless exploration of what it means to belong-to a place, to a people, and to oneself.
Turu Khan is a critically acclaimed Mongolian author and cultural figure whose works have captivated audiences worldwide. His storytelling bridges the ancient and the
modern, offering rare insight into Mongolia's unique history and spiritual landscape. Together with Belgian director Peter Brosens, he directed the award-winning film
State of Dogs, which received 23 international honors and was named one of the 50 most influential documentaries by the EU magazine DOX. The film was later adapted
into this novel, solidifying his place as one of Mongolia's foremost literary voices. Khan's works, celebrated across the United States, the UK, and Germany, explore
universal themes of identity, belonging, and the eternal connection between humans and the natural world.
