As adolescents, Cyrus and Cecil Bowman are not only brothers, they're best friends. Their lives seem adventurous, but ordinary, until Cyrus develops an unusual configuration of blood vessels in his brain. This condition, among other things, causes people in his direct vicinity to experience very vivid hallucinations. Doctors are able to correct the condition, but nature sees fit to endow Cyrus with replacement gifts; namely, an unusual artistic talent and a propensity to play practical jokes. By the time Cyrus completes college, he has found love and has left the memory of his earlier medical problems in the distant past. His talents and relationships promise a bright future until his earlier medical problems suddenly recur, only this time the effects on those around him have grown in number and in magnitude. As seen through the eyes of his brother Cecil, Sphere Of Effect follows the experiences of Cyrus Bowman whose life becomes highly complex because of circumstances far beyond his control. He employs the talents within his command - artistry and humor - to overcome disastrous events in his life and in the lives of those he loves. Just when it seems that quick thinking and tenacity will allow Cyrus to put his life back on track, his brother Cecil discovers that all is not as it seems. There might be one more really big problem to solve.
