Die Sphaera barbarica war eine vom babylonischen Astrologen Teukros geschaffene Zusammenfassung einer vorchristlichen Lehre, wonach der Stand der Himmelsgestirne etwas über künftige Schicksale verraten konnte. Die Lehre verlor über die Jahrhunderte ihre Bedeutung, doch einige Schriften blieben erhalten. Der Philologe Franz Boll (1867-1924) hat sich daran gemacht, sie mit dem Fokus auf griechische Überlieferungen zu untersuchen und zu rekonstruieren. Ihm ist ein umfangreiches Werk gelungen, das die Geschichte der Sternbilder bis ins Mittelalter hinein nachzeichnet. Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1903.
