Small's Big Journey is a powerful children's book based on the true story of Smallwood Small Ackiss, an African American man born into slavery in Virginia who lived to see freedom and claim his right to vote during Reconstruction.
Through accessible storytelling and richly illustrated scenes, young readers follow Small's life from early hardship to newfound independence, witnessing the determination and hope that carried him forward. His journey reflects a pivotal time in American history, when formerly enslaved individuals began to shape their own futures and participate in civic life.
Small's legacy extends beyond his lifetime. He was the great-grandfather of Evelyn Butts, a civil rights leader whose efforts helped lead to the elimination of the poll tax in the United States, expanding access to voting rights for future generations.
This book introduces readers to important themes including freedom, resilience, voting rights, and civic engagement, making it a valuable resource for classrooms, libraries, and families. Small's Big Journey supports discussions of African American history, Reconstruction, and the continuing importance of participation in democracy.
Recommended for children ages 7-10.
