Simply Seventeen Syllables is a collection of 17 haiku poems with the majority of photographs taken by the author over a ten-year span and especially during the pandemic while the author sat on her backyard patio.
Haiku is an unrhymed poem consisting of 17 syllables in lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Originating in Japan, this form of poetry centered around nature which provides hundreds of topics for inspiration for the poet. Over time subjects other than nature became the focus, and some have abandoned the 5, 7, 5 syllables format. While the majority of the poems were inspired by nature, the author has included topics that were just fun to write about or emotions that needed to be felt. At the end of the book are several lined pages for readers to try their hand in capturing their special feeling they may experience when looking up to the sky or down at a squirrel chewing on a nut. The reader may discover those several minutes of jotting down 17 syllables can take away any stress or chaos around to a quieter, more peaceful place, if only lasting moments while focusing on the inspirational subject. Try it-it's fun and it's all yours to enjoy! All proceeds from the sale of this book will be equally divided between two charities focusing on homeless cats and dogs and homeless people: The Salvation Army and the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.
