Jim Witherspoon, a New York investment banker, quit his job and moved his family to Colorado in search of a more wholesome lifestyle. He goes to work for the Department of Wildlife, and what he thought would be a walk in the park outdoor job turns out to be anything but. He finds himself at the center of a growing conflict between the natural world and society. Native American lore suggests that powerful forces are at work to restore balance. A local Shaman informs Jim of Shavano: a mythological figure, part man part bear, that Native Americans believe is sent to revenge the plunder of their civilizations and return the land to its rightful owners. Jim attempts to prove the Shavano legend as mere folklore and tries to protect the area from marauding bears. His efforts prove futile and, in the end, he finds himself and his family in grave danger as the Shavano legend becomes very real.
