In 1987, Charlie Stavros finds out that he is included in Granny Millicent's will. He returns to Merona, Oklahoma to find out about his inheritance and Katie Lynn, who he once loved. Twenty years earlier, he and Katie Lynn planned to run away together, but events from one particular summer night kept that from happening. Charlie left town, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and ended up on a river boat in Vietnam. Katie Lynn married Blaine, who she knew from when she was young. From various viewpoints, including letters from Vietnam, each voice tells part of the story, but when seen together, they amplify how issues from the past influence Katie Lynn and Charlie in the present and condition their choices for the future.
