Second Cup: What She Kept Hidden

Vanessa Lucas has spent years building a life she can control: a well-managed home, a successful career, a loving husband, and two bright children. Beneath the polished surface, however, is a secret she has never told anyone - and a past that taught her safety depends on keeping a tight grip on everything she loves.

When her nineteen-year-old daughter, Ava, overdoses on fentanyl during Christmas break, Vanessa's carefully ordered world begins to fracture. Ava's recovery is uncertain. Vanessa's teenage son is choosing a future she never planned for him. Her beloved mother-in-law is facing a terminal diagnosis. And the friendships Vanessa assumed were solid begin to fail her.

Then she finds Second Cup, a coffee shop where an unlikely circle of women does something Vanessa isn't accustomed to: they show up. They pray without pretending. They make room for pain without trying to fix it. And their faith raises a question Vanessa has kept at a safe distance for years: What if God has been present even in the places she has refused to revisit?

As her family's crises expose the limits of control, the secret Vanessa has carried since childhood begins pressing toward the surface. To move forward, she will have to risk being known, receive the community she never knew she needed, and consider whether letting go might require more courage than holding on.

Second Cup, the first novel in Karen A. Dittman's Forged series, is emotionally rich Christian women's fiction about motherhood, addiction, grief, friendship, hidden pain, and the hard-won hope of discovering that we were never meant to carry everything alone.
