Searching for Home is a literary memoir that begins during the final years of the Iran-Iraq War and follows a young boy's journey from wartime Tehran to refugee life in Toronto, a return to Iran during a period of political and economic transformation in adulthood, and later into corporate life in Dubai and beyond.
At its core, the memoir explores displacement, identity, masculinity, ambition, emotional survival, migration, intimacy, reinvention, and the lifelong search for belonging.
Born in Tehran, Parham grows up in an atmosphere shaped by war, fear, silence, instability, and emotional restraint. When his family immigrates to Canada as refugees, the external war ends, but a quieter internal conflict begins. Toronto becomes both refuge and rupture: a place where he must navigate cultural dislocation, fractured identity, social isolation, and the pressure to adapt while trying to understand who he is becoming.
As he moves through adolescence and adulthood, the memoir traces years marked by ambition, emotional contradiction, troubled relationships, restlessness, and constant reinvention. While pursuing achievement, movement, and success, he slowly begins to realize that much of his external drive is connected to a deeper internal search - one rooted in displacement, unresolved emotional patterns, and the desire to find meaning, intimacy, freedom, and peace.
The narrative later returns to Iran during a period of political and economic transformation, where Parham enters the world of management consulting and corporate life while confronting the emotional and psychological tension of returning to a country that once represented both home and rupture. Iran becomes a mirror reflecting unresolved questions about identity, belonging, masculinity, freedom, and attachment.
From there, the memoir ends in Dubai, where outward success, international mobility, relationships, and constant motion begin to blur the line between exploration and escape.
Throughout the memoir, the search for home gradually shifts from something external - countries, careers, relationships, achievements, movement, into something internal. The emotional arc evolves from survival and ambition toward self-awareness, acceptance, and inner reconciliation.
Written with psychological honesty and reflective depth, Searching for Home sits at the intersection of literary memoir and philosophical self-inquiry. It combines themes of migration and cross-cultural identity with deeper questions around emotional fragmentation, attachment, masculinity, purpose, and the human search for inner peace.
