The Blues have been a way to express and explain a wide range of emotions in poetry and music. Feeling blue is expressed in verses that grieve over injustice or express longing for a better life and lost loves, jobs, and money. The blues also have a gritty way to celebrate pleasure and success. The central meaning of having the blues, is the concept of, by performing, listening, or scribing your blues, one is able to overcome sadness and lose the blues. The blues are often about struggle and depression; they are also full of determination to overcome difficulty through sheer toughness of spirit.
