Saint-Gildas: Or The Three Paths (1856) is a novel written by Julia Kavanagh. The story is set in the early 19th century in Brittany, France. The protagonist of the story is a young woman named Mary Percival, who is sent to live with her aunt in Brittany after the death of her parents. Mary is a devout Catholic and is fascinated by the life of Saint Gildas, a Breton saint who lived in the 6th century. The novel follows Mary's journey as she navigates the three paths of life the path of the world, the path of the flesh, and the path of the spirit. Mary is torn between her desire for a worldly life and her devotion to God. She meets several characters along the way, including a young priest who becomes her spiritual guide, a wealthy aristocrat who tries to seduce her, and a group of nuns who help her find her true calling. The novel explores themes of faith, temptation, and the struggle between the material and spiritual worlds. It also provides a glimpse into the customs and traditions of Brittany in the 19th century. Overall, Saint-Gildas: Or The Three Paths is a thought-provoking and engaging novel that offers a unique perspective on the challenges of living a virtuous life in a world full of temptation. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
