This historical book documents individual stories of those brave souls who escaped from the Hungarian village of Szentpéterfa (Petrovo Selo) between 1948-1989, when the Communist regime was in power. It is based on interviews made with scores of individuals, and includes three waves of refugees who crossed the border into Austria on their quest for freedom and stability. The first group escaped from Hungary between 1948-1955 when the Hungarian People's Republic came into power. The second group between escaped between 1956-1958 starting in the year when the Hungarian Uprising was crushed by the Soviet intervention into Hungary. The third group crossed the border between 1959-1989, before the Communist reign ended when they relinquished power in October 1989, with the formal proclamation of the Republic of Hungary.
