A worker whose performance is flawless, whose compliance is absolute, and yet whose trust continues to decline.
As Walter investigates, he uncovers a truth the System was never designed to explain. Trust is not earned. It is rationed. Stability depends on scarcity, and someone must absorb the cost of what cannot be eliminated. Intervention does not correct injustice. It redistributes it.
The System is a quiet, unsettling dystopian novel about bureaucratic power, predictive control, and the erosion of moral agency in a world that has optimized itself beyond accountability. There are no villains, no revolutions, and no grand speeches. Only procedures, thresholds, and the slow realization that survival no longer requires belief, only persistence.
